HELENA, Mont. -- Dan Rambo, who had a spotty professional football career after leading the nation in rushing for Carroll College, said Monday he will become director of player personnel for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

'The only other time I had been in a general manager's office I was being cut or fired,' Rambo said.

'Now it's the other way around.'

As a senior running back in 1975, Rambo led the NAIA with an average of more than 150 yards per game.

He was not taken in the NFL draft that year, but joined the New York Giants as a free agent. He was cut after one month, and for the next four years tried out or played for professional and semi-pro teams in Philadelphia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, West Virginia, Green Bay and Oakland.

'Finally after all these years, these contacts are paying off,' he said.

Rambo got to know Saskatchewan when he unsuccessfully tried out for the Roughriders in 1976, he said. The 30-year-old Libby, Mont., native, who has lived in Helena since 1970, said he likes the Saskatchewan area, but will miss Montana.
