MONTREAL -- Rookie goaltender Bob Froese of Philadelphia was named the National Hockey League's player of the week Monday after logging three victories and a 2.67 goals-against average last week.

Froese began the week by holding the high-scoring Edmonton Oilers to three goals and backstopping the Flyers to a 7-3 victory on Feb. 17.

He posted his 11th victory of the season Feb. 19 in an 8-5 triumph against New York Rangers and finished the week by blanking New Jersey Devils 3-0 Feb. 20 for his third shutout of the year.

Froese lowered his average to 1.85 for the season and ran his undefeated string to 13 games, with a 12-0-1 record.

Others considered were Edmonton defenseman Kevin Lowe, center Thomas Steen of Winnipeg Jets and center Marcel Dionne of Los Angeles Kings.
