British monarch visits Mexico

By FREDERICK KIEL

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico -- Queen Elizabeth II toured Puerto Vallarta and was serenaded by a chorale group of 22 elderly women from an old-age center during her third stop on a tour of Mexico's west coast.

After the 412-foot royal yacht Britannia steamed into the sun-drenched harbor Sunday, Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip motored ashore in a blue launch flying the British royal and national flag.

Dressed in a peacock blue and grey print dress and matching hat, the queen was greeted by local dignitaries and members of the British community of the resort city.

Hundreds of tourists jammed the port to see the queen. Some clapped as she went by.

Mexican Foreign Relations Minister Bernardo Sepulveda and his British counterpart, Francis Pym, completed three days of talks aboard the ship.

Sepulveda said they discussed the Falkland Islands, oil prices and the conflict in Central America but gave few details.

Puerto Vallarta, made famous by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton with the movie 'The Night of the Iguana,' was the third stop of the queen's tour of Mexico's Pacific coast. She will continue to the United States and Canada.

The queen and the royal party traveled in a state government bus to the Integral Center for Attention to the Elderly and an orphanage located about two miles inland in an area of lush vegetation.

As the queen entered the home for the elderly, a chorale group of 22 women dressed in long gowns, the color of red bougainvillea roses, greeted her.

With a guitar accompaniment, they sang a song called 'An Old Love,' as the queen was presented gifts, including a painting, a record album of the group's songs and food wrapped in a napkin.

The royal couple next visited the Unit for Infant Assistance and Social Integration, an orphanage and youth social center alongside the old people's home.

The queen's itinerary included a lunch with President Miguel de la Madrid and a dinner for the Mexican leader aboard the royal yacht before it sailed for the Baja California peninsula.

The royal party is to land in Baja Tuesday. The Mexican city of La Paz is her last port of call before heading to California, where she will meet with President Reagan.
