NEW YORK -- The porter of a West Side hotel shot four people dead including his wife, a 12-year-old girl and the hotel owner, and seriously wounded a woman in a shooting spree today, police said.

The shootings occurred about 10:30 a.m. at the Hotel Belleclaire, a single room occupancy hotel.

Police Lt. Michael Duffy said the suspect, who was arrested in the hotel and charged with homicide, killed the owner of the hotel and wounded the owner's wife in the hotel lobby. He also killed a 15-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl, and his own wife, who was 50.

A resident said the porter lived in the hotel with his family.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released.

The wounded woman was reported in guarded condition at Roosevelt Hospital with gunshot wounds to her neck and back, a hospital spokesman said.

'He's believed to be the perpetrator,' Duffy said of the porter.

The porter was not immediately identified. Duffy said police did not know why he went on the shooting spree.
