The impending sale of the Waterloo Courier and the...

WATERLOO, Iowa -- The impending sale of the Waterloo Courier and the Cedar Falls Record to Howard Publications Inc. has been announced by Robert J. McCoy, president of the newspapers.

McCoy Wednesday said agreement in principle has been reached for purchase by Howard Publications of all assets of W.H. Hartman Co., publisher ofthe two dailies.

McCoy said the sale is subject to satisfaction of certain legal requirements. Closing is expected in February. No purchase price was announced.

Howard Publications, based in Oceanside, Calif., owns 18 daily newspapers in New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and California.

In Iowa, the company owns 50 percent of Sioux City Journal.

McCoy is president, secretary and treasurer of the Hartman Co. and Cedar Falls Publishing Co. and, since 1952, has served as the executive editor and general manager of the Waterloo Courier. He will continue with the new corporation in an advisory capacity.

The Courier has been owned by the same family for 128 years. It has a daily circulation of about 55,000. The Record has a daily circulation of about 4,000.
