AGANA, Guam -- The boyfriend of former Miss World Kimberly Santos, apparently fearing she would reject his offers of marriage, killed himself Tuesday in the beauty queen's backyard, police said.
Franck 'Francois' Robert Reyes, 26, a native of Guam, shot himself with a rifle in the yard behind the Santos family home, Sgt. Vicente M. Perez said.
Ms. Santos, 23, was at home at the time of the shooting. Police said Ms. Santos had signed a two-year modeling contract and Reyes feared they would be separated, dashing hopes of marriage.
Perez said investigators would interview Ms. Santos again Wednesday.
'Kim was very upset and we decided to leave her alone until tomorrow,' Perez said.
Police said Reyes and Ms. Santos had spoken shortly before the shooting and that he had written her several letters saying said he could not live without her.
Reyes, known as a champion swimmer, had been Ms. Santos' constant companion for several years and was 'the boyfriend back home' she spoke of when she was crowned Miss World in 1980. Friends thought marriage would follow when her Miss World obligations were finished.
Reyes has been attending school in Hawaii and was in Guam for the holidays as a house guest of the Santos family.
