DETROIT -- A 15-year-old Finney High School student was in stable condition Tuesday with a bullet lodged in his abdomen from a shooting in a crowded hallway.

Kevin Davis, an honor roll student, was shot in the left abdomen by one of three gunmen Monday after he surrendered a $135 jacket to them in a school hallway.

'It was senseless,' said Davis' mother, Lutitia, who added she had always told her son to surrender the jacket, trimmed with a fur collar, if anyone tried to steal it.

Authorities said the Max Julian jacket has become a status symbol among Detroit's teenagers since it is often worn by members of Young Boys Inc., a notorious heroin distribution ring in the city in which 10- and 11-year-old children are used to peddle drugs.

Authorities saidthe bullet ruptured Davis' colon and doctors were unable to remove it during surgery Monday.

School principal Moses Petty said he periodically warns students not to wear the jackets or expensive jewelry and not to bring large sums of money to the school.
