LOS ALTOS, Calif. -- For an unprecedented third time, East Germany's Maria Koch has been selected the women's track and field athlete of the year by Track and Field News.

The 25-year-old Koch received 24 of 28 first-place votes from the magazine's international panel, easily out-distancing high jump world-record setter Ulrike Meyfarth of West Germany.
