TOKYO -- Hilario Zapata of Panama succeeded in the second defense of his World Boxing Council (WBC) junior flyweight crown Tuesday night by stopping Japanese challenger Tadashi Tomori at 1:59 of the eighth round.

Zapata gained the title from Tomori in a controversial split decision in Kanazawa, in northern Japan, in July.

Zapata missed his prediction before the fight that he would knock out Tomori in the seventh when the bell saved Tomori after a knockdown in Tomori's corner.
