MANILA, Philippines -- A U.S. Navy petty officer died of injuries suffered in a 30-foot fall aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, the Navy said Saturday.
The seaman was identified as Petty Officer 1st Class Mike L. Lamb, 29, of Zion, Ill.
Lamb died in a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, West Germany, where he was flown by a medical evacuation aircraft from the Enterprise, according to Lt. Steve Honda, a spokesman for the Seventh Fleet, which includes the Enterprise.
Honda said Lamb was injured Nov. 20 in a 30-foot fall from the ship's mast to the deck as the Enterprise conducted routine operations in the Indian Ocean.
He said initial reports indicated Lamb was attempting to remove a flag from a signal yard arm 'in an unauthorized extension of the crossing the Equator ceremony.'
The incident is under investigation, Honda said.
