Gulf takes over most of General Atomic

NEW YORK -- Gulf Oil Corp. will take over most of the business activities of General Atomic Co. from a Royal Dutch-Shell subsidiary, the companies announced Monday.

General Atomic, a nuclear research and engineering firm based in San Diego, Calif., was founded in 1973 as a 50-50 partnership between Gulf and Scallop Nuclear Inc., which belongs to the Royal Dutch-Shell group.

The companies said that under the agreement that was completed Oct. 29 most of General Atomic's operations are being transferred to GA Technologies Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Gulf. No terms were disclosed.

GA Technologies will move into General Atomic's facilities in San Diego.

Dr. H. M. Agnew, the former head of General Atomic, has been named president of GA Technologies.

The companies said General Atomic's 1,800 employees will be employed by GA Technolgies and continue their engineering work on the high temperature gas-cooled reactor and research in fusion energy.

GA Technologies is expected to work on someprograms for the Defense Department.

The Gulf-Scallop partnership will change its name from General Atomic to Valley Pines Associates and retain its 50 percent interest in the Allied General Nuclear Services fuel reprocessing and research center in Barnwell, S.C., the companies said. Valley Pines also will keep certain obligations that are not assigned to GA Technologies.
