FRANKFURT, West Germany -- A terrorist bomb attack early today on a U.S. Army housing area damaged two parked automobiles and broke a number of windows, an American spokesman said.
Thirty-five American military families were evacuated from a housing project after the bomb went off in case other explosives might be in the area, the spokesman said.
The families returned to their apartments when no other bombs were found.
The bomb that went off was contained in a fire extinguisher, which was considered a sign the Baader-Meinhhof terrorist band was behind the attack. The group often uses fire extinguisher bombs.
The bomb went off at 12:55 a.m. at the Drake Edwards housing aera.
The fire extinghusher was planted under a small American-owned bus.
Such housing areas are open to the public and are not fenced off as barracks are.
Late last month terrorists tried to blow up a German freight train carrying U.S. Army supplies to an army installation in Giessen, 36 miles north of Frankfurt.
The attacks underlined a West German government warning terrorists might be planning new attacks on U.S. installations.
A government security report released late last month said the Baader-Meinhof, which calls itself the Red Army Faction, still is capable of 'terrorist attacks of great significance.'
'Therefore more attacks most be counted on.' the report said.
