REGINA, Saskatchewan -- Jim Spavital, general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, was in Detroit Monday to discuss the possibility of accepting a job with the U.S. Football League franchise in that city, a Roughrider official said Monday.

Gord Staseson, a member of the team's management committee, said team president Dick Rendek had given Spavital permission to talk to the Detroit club.

'The president has made us aware that Jim had an invitation to go to Detroit for an interview and has permission to do that,' Staseson said.

Spavital, an Oklahoman who once played with the Baltimore Colts and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has been the Roughrider's general manager since 1979, and has a year remaining on his present contract.

A former Blue Bombers' head coach in the early '70s, Spavital joined the defunct World Football League as coach and general manager of the Chicago Fire in 1974.
