THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboy officials Thursday said veteran fullback Timmy Newsome, who walked out of training camp earlier in the week, would rejoin the team when it returns to Dallas Friday.

The 6-foot-1, 232-pound fullback left training camp after Coach Tom Landry informed Newsome he was being shifted to tailback.

Landry had criticized the third-year veteran, saying he needed 'to be much more competitive.'

Backfield coach Al Lavan said the play of veterans Robert Newhouse and Ron Springs prompted shifting Newsome to tailback.

Newsome left camp Wednesday, returning to Dallas. He was not available for comment.

A team spokesman Thursday said he had talked with Newsome and he planned to rejoin the team Friday.

Dallas opens its exhibition schedule Saturday night at Texas Stadium against Buffalo.
