Roosevelt was driving his BMW car last Friday in New Marlboro when he lost control at an intersection, police said.

Authorities said the Roosevelt car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went out of control, careened onto a lawn, back onto the road and flipped over.

A passenger in the car, Andrew Costerus, 18, of Marion, Mass., was in critical condition Friday at the medical center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Both men were students at Simons Rock-Bard College, an experimental school in Great Barrington offering college courses to pre-college age students.

Roosevelt, who made his home in Sandersfield and New York City, was the son of composer J. Willard Roosevelt, and the great-grandson of Joseph Willard, the U.S. ambassador to Spain.

A memorial ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blodgett Hall, Simon Rock-Bard College, with his family and friends reading his works and poems.

Private interment will be Monday at the Roosevelt family plot in Young's Cemetery, Oyster Bay, N.Y.
