U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White was attacked Thursday...

SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White was attacked Thursday by a man who punched him in the neck and head just befmmitWhite rose to make a speech befmmitthe Utah Bar Association.

The assailant, identified as Newton C. Estes, Kaysville, Utah, rushed White screaming complaints about pornography and court-ordered school busing, witnesses said. He allegedly shouted that 'busing and pornography just don't go.'

Lawyers at the formal luncheon lunged at the man and wrestled him into submission. He was taken into custody by the FBI.

White said he was unhurt and quipped that he was hit harder as a football star at University of Colordado where he was an All-America running back and known as 'Whizzer White.'

In Washington, the Supreme Court press office reported the 65-year-old justice suffered only 'a slight abrasion' on the cheek and went on to give his speech as planned.

'The justice was struck on the cheek causing a slight abrasion,' a spokesman said. 'The justice was otherwise undisturbed.'

After his college football, White played pro ball for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1962 by President Kennedy.

Witnesses said the well-dressed attacker made his way casually along the back of the head table at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City as White was being introduced.

Just as White rose from his chair at the head table, the assailant suddenly began pummeling the justice from behind. Witnesses said up to three blows landed on White around his head and neck.
