Maj. Gen. James J. McMonagle has taken command of...

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. -- Maj. Gen. James J. McMonagle has taken command of the Parris Island Marine Recruit Training Depot from Maj. Gen. Robert E. Haebel.

McMonagle, 50, former assistant depot commander at the Marines' San Diego recruit training facility, assumed command at Parris Island Thursday.

Haebel, 54, will become the senior Marine in the Pacific when he assumes command of the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa and the 3rd Marine Amphibious Force.

Parris Island annually trains about 25,000 recruits, including 2,500 women.
