BANGKOK, Thailand -- Pone Kingpetch, Thailand's first world boxing champion, died Monday night of pneumonia and heart failure.
He was 47.
Pone won the world flyweight title in April 1960 in Bangkok when he beat Spain's Pascual Perez on points in a title bout.
pone held the title off and on for four years and his two greatest rivals during the time he held the title were Harada and Ebihara, both of Japan. He beat them in return bouts and held his championship until he lost the title to Italy's Salvator Burrini in Rome in 1964.
Pone is survived by a wife and a daughter.
