Japan's oldest woman dies

TOKYO -- Mrs. Toka Miyata, the oldest woman in Japan, died at a senior citizens home in southern Japan Saturday at the age of 110, home officials said.

Mrs. Miyata, widow of a Japanese innkeeper in Kumamoto, was the second oldest person reported in Japan after Shigechiyo Izumi, 116. He is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest person in the world.


Mrs. Miyata had been in the home for the aged in Kumamoto since February 1975 when her 69-year-old daughter fell ill. She was born on Jan. 21, 1872.
