TEMPE, Ariz. -- Gaylord Perry, who is just three victories shy of the 300-career mark, Friday signed a minor-league contract with the Seattle Mariners.

The 43-year-old Perry, who has a 297-239 record in 19 major league seasons, was expected to join the Mariners in time for Saturday's workouts.

Perry is hoping to become the 15th pitcher in major league history to reach the 300-victory level.

'He will be here on a make-good basis,' said Mariner president Dan O'Brien. 'He won't stand in the way of any of our young kids making a club, but based on his background I feel we will have to give him the benefit of the doubt.'

Perry is the only pitcher to have won the Cy Young Award in both leagues. He ranks second on the all-time strikeout list with 3,336, just 172 behind Walter Johnson.

He also ranks fifth on the all-time list in games started (628) and innings pitched (4,949) and 14th among pitchers who have pitched 3,000 or more innings in earned run average (2.99).

A participant in five major league All-Star games, Perry broke into the big leagues with the San Francisco Giants in 1962. He's also pitched with Cleveland, Texas, San Diego, the New York Yankess and Atlanta.

With the Braves last season, Perry was 8-9 with a 3.93 ERA.
