LOS ANGELES -- A deaf street gang member who read the testimony during his trial on a computerized television screen was convicted of murdering an apartment manager but aquitted of a jailhouse slaying.
Prosecutor Robert Corrado said he will present evidence at the April 2 sentencing of Michael 'Oso' Contereras that the 28-year-old convicted killer was a 'devil worshipper' and was involved in at least three previous slayings.
Contreras was found guilty Thursday of second-degree murder in the death of his apartment manager, Xavier Guillen, who was shot in the head after a party in November 1980. Contreras was also convicted of using a firearm in commission of a felony and of two counts of possessing a deadly weapon while in jail.
Contreras was found innocent of killing Rick Williams, a 23-year-old inmate who was stabbed to death in county jail last March.
Contreras followed his trial on a television-like computer terminal that printed the testimony as a court reporter recorded it on an electronic stenographic machine.
