NEW YORK -- Bill Fitch of the Boston Celtics and Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers will coach the East and West teams, respectively, in the 32nd annual NBA All-Star game to be played on Jan. 31 a the Meadowlands Arena, the league announced Saturday.
Fitch and Riley earned the coaching honors because their teams are assured of having the best records in their respective conferences following the games of Sunday Jan. 17.
It will be the first All-Star coaching appearance for both men. Fitch, who guided the Celtics to the NBA title last season and won Coach of the Year honors in 1976 and 1980, is in his 12th season of NBA coaching. Riley is in his first season as a coach, having replaced Paul Westhead as coach of the Lakers two months ago.
