The U.S. Olympic Committee has named world figure skating champion Scott Hamilton and cyclist Sheila Young Ochowicz as its 1981 U.S. Amateur Athletes of the Year. Hamilton, 22, of Denver, became only the sixth American to win a world crown in skating since 1896 when he captured the 1981 World Men's Figure Skating title at Hartford, Conn. Ms. Young Ochowicz, an Olympic gold medalist in speed skating at Innsbruck in 1976, retired from competition until last year.
She captured the sprint title in the World Cycling Championships in Brno, Czechoslovakia, at age 30, her second world cycling title. Great Britain's Olympic gold medalist, Sebastian Coe, was selected as the International Athlete of the year for his 1981 running efforts during which he set several new world marks.
