Solidarity candle burns house down

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Dorothy and Philip Rogers followed President Reagan's patriotic lead and put a lighted candle in their window as a sign of solidarity with Polish workers.

It burned their house down.

'We don't want to talk about it,' said Mrs. Rodgers, whose family escaped unharmed but pet dog and cat perished when the candle on a window sill ignited the porch and exploding aerosol cans ignited the house which was gutted.

'If this had happened a few hours later, I don't want to even think of what would have happened,' Deputy Fire Chief Raymond Gagne said of the blaze that erupted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
