QUEBEC -- Fire officials were investigating arson Thursday as a possible cause of a blaze that gutted a two-storey building rented by the provincial government to store documents.

The fire, which broke out early Thursday, took nearly five hours to bring under control.

It destroyed the 10-year old building and caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the suburban Ste. Foy structure, a fire official said.

A storage area where the government documents were held was ravaged by the flames, said Lieut. Raynauld Pare. He said it would take several days before investigators were able to determine the cause of the fire and added the inquiry would examine the possibility of arson.

More than 30 firefighters from Ste. Foy and Quebec City joined ranks to fight the fire. There were no injuries.
