NEW YORK -- The weekly A.C. Nielsen television ratings issued today confirmed that two old favorites, James Garner and Jane Wyman, crashed the top 10 in the debuts of their new shows last week.
Garner, shedding his long-time image as the hero of the now discontinued 'Rockford Files', assumed his old-time role as cowboy Brett Maverick in the new series of that name on NBC and his two-hour opening show landed in the No. 7 slot as that network's only show in the top 10.
Miss Wyman, long-time movie star and one-time wife of Ronald Reagan, headlines the new Falcon Crest drama which wound up in the No. 8 slot right behind Maverick.
On the other hand, another old favorite, Jim Arness, once the hero of the long-running 'Gunsmoke' show, did not fare as well, the latest episode of his new series McClain's Law reposing in the No. 61 slot. Other new shows with low ratings included Open All Night 64th, Shannon 65th, and Darkroom 69th.
CBS, with eight of the shows in the top 10, led the three-network weekly ratings at 18.7, followed by ABC at 17.7 and NBC at 17.0.
