LOS ANGELES -- Tom Ramsey passed for one touchdown and ran for another while Kevin Nelson rushed for 111 yards, including a 28-yard scoring run Saturday to lead 14th-ranked UCLA to a 34-24 Pacific-10 victory over Arizona State.
The triumph put the Bruins into a share of the conference lead with Washington State. Both teams have 5-1-1 records. Washington is a half game back at 5-2 after its victory Saturday over Southern Cal, which dropped to 4-2.
Arizona State fell to 4-2 in the conference but the Sun Devils are serving an NCAA probation and are ineligible for post-season play.
The race for the Rose Bowl will go down to the final week. UCLA closes out its regular season next Saturday against Southern Cal while Washington State plays Washington.
Trailing 31-24, Arizona State got the ball back with 2:32 left and drove to the UCLA 38, but on first down, a Mike Pagel pass was tipped by UCLA's Karl Morgan and picked off by Joe Gary, clinching the victory for the Bruins, who interecepted two passes earlier in the game.
UCLA closed out the scoring with 49 seconds remaining on a 44-yard field goal by Norm Johnson.
Ramsey completed 8-of-15 passes for 177 yards. His touchdown pass was a 57-yard bomb to JoJo Townsell and his TD run was 1-yard plunge over the middle that gave the Bruins the lead for good with 9:35 left in the game.
Nelson carried 28 times for his 111 yards. His 28-yard touchdown run came early in the second period after Arizona State had taken 14-0 lead in the opening period.
Arizona State, which entered the game with the nation's most prolific offense, averaging 552 yards per game, was led by Pagel, who completed 20-of-36 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns.
Tailback Willie Gittens was the leading ground gainer with 64 yards in nine carries while Bernard Henry caught seven passes for 118 yards to lead all receivers.
Arizona Sate took a 7-0 lead mdway through the first period on a 1-yard pass from Pagel to Ron Wetzell and made it 14-0, 2 -minutes later on a 12-yard TD pass from Pagel to Henry.
UCLA made it 14-7 on Nelson's touchdown run and tied the game late in the second period when Ramsey and Townsell teamed on the 57-yard scoring bomb.
The Bruins took a 17-14 lead with 2:12 left in the half on a 34-yard field goal by Johnson that came after a 59-yard punt return Jimmy Turner. But The Sun Devils made it 17-17 on a 38-yard field goal by Luis Zendejaf with feive second left in the half.
UCLA took a 24-17 lead in the fourthj quarter on Ramsey's 1-yard touchdown dive that came after Pagel's third interception of the game. The Bruins boosted their lead to 31-17 with 5:27 left on a 2-yard TD run by Burness Scott.
Arizona State made it 31-24 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Gerald Riggs before Johnson capped the scoring for the Bruins with his second field goal.
