INDIANAPOLIS -- Dr. Thomas Hanna, medical director at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, died Thursday in Houston, Texas, where he was visiting a daughter.
He was 72.
Hanna, a physician at the Speedway since 1936, became the track's medical director in 1960. Under his direction, the IMS medical facility was expanded and modernized, including the construction of an infield hospital to handle virtually any emergency.
Hanna's son, Thomas Jr., is an assistant dean at the Indiana University Medical Center and has worked for several years with his father at the track.
