PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday re-signed running back Calvin Murray, their fourth-round pick in the 1981 NFL draft, and placed Louie Giammona on the injured reserve list.

Giammona, the Eagles' backup tailback and special teams captain, suffered torn cartilage in his left knee in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay and underwent surgery Monday.

He is expected to be lost for the season.

An Eagles spokesman said Murray had to clear procedural waivers before being placed on the active roster since he was cut once by the team.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Murray gained 21 yards in eight carries and 94 yards on four kickoff returns for the Eagles in pre-season before being waived.

A native of Woodbine, N.J., Murray was the No. 2 all-time ground gainer at Ohio State, finishing his college career with 2,576 yards.
