NEW DELHI, India -- Gajraben Desai, wife of India's former prime minister, died Sunday in Bombay.

She was 81.

Mrs. Desai had an undisclosed illness for the last several months, medical sources said without elaborating.

In 1979, her husband Moraji was the first Indian prime minister forced to quit while still in office. He stepped down because of squabbling in his 17-month-old coalition government following victory over Indira Gandhi.
