Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau will be given the Family...

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau will be given the Family of Man award in New York City on Nov. 5 for demonstrating an outstanding example of excellence in society, the Prime Minister's Office has announced.

The Society for the Family of Man, an international and interfaith organization, was founded in 1963 by the Council of Churches of the City of New York to honor outstanding examples of excellence in society.

Trudeau was to be awarded the 1981 Gold Medallion.

The award was given to West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt last year and to Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo in 1979.

Prime Minister Lester Pearson was the most recent Canadian recipient, winning the award in 1965.
