OROVILLE -- Ex-convict Willie Carter Spann, a nephew of former President Jimmy Carter, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of attempted house burglary.
Butte County Superior Court Lucian Vandegrift accepted the plea to a reduced charge and set sentencing for Sept. 25.
Spann, 34, faced up to five years in prison.
Spann was held without bail in the county jail.
Spann and his wife, Susan Lynn Spann, were arrested July 5 by Chico Police investigating the attempted burglary of a house.
Spann pleaded innocent to the charge of first-degree burglary and trial was set for Sept. 14. After negotiations with the district attorney, Spann entered his plea to the lesser offense.
He previously served time in prison for holding up a San Francisco tavern.
