SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers, trying to shore up their kicking game, Monday acquired punter George Roberts from the Miami Dolphins and traded kicker Mike Wood to the Baltimore Colts.

The Chargers also cut rookie free agent punter Jeff Gossett from Eastern Illinois.

San Diego's remaining four cuts to get down to the 45-man roster limit were to be announced Tuesday.

Roberts, acquired for a future draft choice, was the NFL's fourth-ranked punter in 1980, averaging 42.6 yards on 77 punts. During this year's pre-season, Roberts averaged 45.4 yards on seven punts, with a longest kick of 53. He was on injured reserve last season.

Wood, a three-year veteran from Southeast Missouri State, came to the Chargers as a free agent in 1979 after illness had sidelined Rolf Benirschke. He converted 11-of-14 field goal attempts for the Chargers.

Wood, who sat out most of last season with an injury, was sent to Baltimore for a future draft choice.
