HAWTHORNE, Calif. -- Rock musicians Sylvester Stewart -- former leader of the Sly and the Family Stone group -- and George Clinton were arrested today by police who allegedly found cocaine and freebasing paraphernalia in their car.

Stewart, 37, was pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving and police said they found vials of the white powdery drug on the front seat between him and Clinton, 41.

The two singer-songwriters were booked on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and Stewart also was wanted on two outstanding traffic warrants.

Stewart was released on $2,700 bail and Clinton, leader of the rock groupParliament-Funkadelic, posted $2,500. Both were freed at about 6 a.m.
