SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The New England Patriots Thursday signed veteran tight end Terry Nelson, but it appears veteran running back Allan Clark will miss the season, officials said.
Team officials at the Bryant College training camp said Clark successfully underwent surgery Wednesday and will remain in Norwood Hospital in Norwood, Mass., for at least four days.
'He will probably be lost for the season,' the Patriots said in a statement. Clark injured the ligaments in his right knee during practice last Sunday.
Nelson, 6-foot-2 and 240-pounds, joined his new teammates at practice but four free agent holdouts were noticeably absent. No progress was reported in efforts to sign Ray Hamilton, Don Hasselbeck, Horace Ivory and Rod Shoate.
Team officials announced a roster cut to balance Nelson's signing: rookie free agent linebacker Neil McGrath, a former Boston University player.
