Alleged 'Greek Mob' don found shot to death

EAST LANSDOWNE, Pa. -- The bullet-riddled body of Harry Peetros, a reputed don of Philadelphia's 'Greek Mob,' was found in the trunk of his car Tuesday, authorities said.

Thomas Gallagher, chief of the county's Criminal Investigation Division, said Peetros, 53, of nearby Drexel Hill, was found at 4 a.m. by an East Lansdowne patrolman who noticed the victim's 1979 Cadillac in a no-parking zone.

The body, identified through fingerprints, was found face down and fully clothed, Gallagher said.

A county coroner tentatively ruled that Peetros died of multiple gunshot wounds, Gallagher said. He would not discuss the number or nature of the wounds, except to say that police believe the victim was shot with a handgun.

'Ithas the earmarks of an organized crime killing,' said Gallagher.

However, he said authorities had no motive for the murder.

The 1980 Pennsylvania Crime Commission report identifies Peetros as one of 'the elder statesmen of the so-called Greek Mob in Philadelphia.' The report said Peetros 'allegedly engaged in loan sharking and illegal gambling.'

Peetros was last seen by his wife at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at their home, Gallagher said.

'The investigation at the scene turned up no evidence that he had been shot in East Lansdowne,' Gallagher said. 'It looks like he had been shot somewhere else and brought to the location in East Lansdowne where we found him.'
