LONDON -- Princess Anne, only daughter of Queen Elizabeth, gave birth Friday to an 8-pound, 1-ounce daughter -- her second child -- and Buckingham Palace said both were well.
Although Anne, 30, is the wife of a commoner, Capt. Mark Phillips, the queen's second grandchild is sixth in line to the British throne. The girl has not yet been named.
The princess, who said recently that motherhood is 'an occupational hazard of being a wife,' already has a 3-year-old son who is fifth in line, although he remains a commoner at his parents' request.
Phillips, present at the birth, said 'I am absolutely delighted.' His wife was admitted to Queen Mary hospital in London six hours before the baby was born, the palace said.
After Prince Charles, 32, uncle to the new royal baby and heir to the throne, come two more uncles, Prince Andrew, 21, and Prince Edward, 17, followed by Anne herself.
Anne's son, Peter Mark Andrew Phillips, was the first non-titled grandchild of a ruling sovereign to be born a commoner in five centuries.
In a television interview in March, Anne said she found pregnancy 'very boring.'
'I'm not particularly maternal in outlook. It's an occupational hazard of being a wife,' she said.
Anne is the queen's second child and the only one married until Prince Charles weds Lady Diane Spencer July 29. She met Philips through their mutual interest in showjumping.
The Phillips live in a 35-room mansion, Gatcombe Park in rural Gloucestershire where, Anne said, it is easier for her children to grow up normally than in most places.
Peter 'is actually perfectly normal, but people are always going to say he's not because he's the Queen's grandson,' she said.
Royal nanny Pat Moss, 40, a railman's daughter, will take care of the new addition to the royal nursery. Ms. Moss moved in with the couple two months ago, taking over from Anne's own old nanny Mabel Anderson.
