NEW YORK -- United Press International Wednesday announced an agreement in principle with Eastern Broadcast Services, Inc., for purchase of production facilities of UPI NEWSTIME in Douglasville, Ga.
EBS President James E. Uglum said his company intends to continue production of a news service for cable television systems, using the slow-scan video technique dfeveloped by UPI.
NEWSTIME, introduced in 1978, draws from UPI photographs and audio material and is used by 114 cable systems. UPI previously announced plans to discontinue NEWSTIME on April 30.
Gordon Rice, UPI vice president for broadcast services, said the news service and EBS will attempt to transfer control of the production equipment so there will be no interruption in service.
In addition to acquring the production facilities and picture library, Rice said the tentative agreement includes a contract for UPI to provide its news, Audio Network and Newspicture services to EBS for the new venture.
EBS is an Atlanta-based radio and television production company. It also is involved in production of management and sales training programs and operates the Columbia School of Broadcasting in Atlanta.
