State Department message to embassies about Reagan shooting

By WASHINGTON, March 31, 1981 (UPI)-The State Department sent a series of brief, factual messages to American embassies abroad and to foreign embassies in the United States, informing them of the shooting of President Reagan.

Spokesman William Dyess said the first message sent out by the State Department said, "There has been an attempt on the life of President Reagan. He is in a hospital in stable condition. The vice president is returning to Washington." Dyess said the messages were continually updated.
