LOS ANGELES -- The father of Los Angeles Rams' quarterback Vince Ferragamo says a 'deal is set' that will probably take his son to the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes next season, it was reported today.
Vince Ferragamo Sr. said Tuesday the deal is contingent on two developments, neither of which was expected to pose serious obstacles, the Los Angeles Times said.
One is CFL approval of the sale of the Montreal franchise to Vancouver multimillionaire Nelson Skalbania. The other is the trading of the rights of Ferragamo from the Hamilton Tiger Cats to the Alouettes.
Ferragamo's agent, David Fishof, answered 'no comment' when told of the older Ferragamo statement.
Fishof called published figures that Ferragamo's Alouette contract call for $1.6 million over four years plus a percentage of the gate 'totally inaccurate.'
The Rams' free agent quarterback was not available for comment.
Rams' General Manager Don Klosterman said Fishof promised to contact him before Ferragamo signs with another team, and said he has no indication that Fishof will renege on that promise.
'He'll regret that he went to Canada,' said Klosterman, who quarterbacked the CFL's Calgary Stampeders in 1955-56. 'Vince's forte is throwing the football, not running it. Up there, you're forced to run a great deal more... He's got such a great supporting cast here... What kind of supporting cast will he have somewhere else?
'I think he passed up a good opportunity to be a Hall of Fame quarterback,' Klosterman said.
