HOUSTON -- Houston Oilers veteran Ted Thompson, a linebacker pressed into service as a kicker in 1980, has signed a contract to play next season, the team said Wednesday.
His agreement leaves seven Oilers veterans unsigned six weeks before those players can begin negotiating with other teams as free agents. Included in the unsigned list are Billy Johnson, Mike Reinfeldt, Morris Towns and Bob Young.
Thompson, 28, a native of Atlanta, Texas, and a graduate of SMU, has played with the Oilers six seasons. He started two games last season and kicked four extra points against the New York Jets when Toni Fritsch was injured.
