SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- President Reagan has appointed a woman as the head of the Environmental Protection Agency and is considering an Illinois-based communications executive for his ambassador to Great Britain.
Nominated to be administrator of the EPA was Ann McGill Gorsuch, an attorney in the legal department of Mountain Bell in Denver, Colo. Mrs. Gorsuch, 38, also has seved as a deputy district attorney in Denver and was active in the enactment in 1977 of air quality legislation.
John Jeffry Louis, chairman of the Phoenix-based Combine Communications Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Gannett communications empire, has been picked as Reagan's ambassador to the Court of St. James, the Washington Post reported, quoting informed sources.
Louis, 54, of Winnetka, Ill., has been a heavy contributor to Republican candidates. His background in international relations consists largely of a stint in international marketing for his mother's business -- Johnson's Wax -- in the late 1950s.
White House deputy press secretary Karna Small said she could neither confirm nor deny the report.
The president also nominated John Whitlock Hernandez to serve as deputy administrator of the EPA. Hernandez, 51, has been a professor since 1968 at New Mexico State University and is past dean of the College of Engineering.
