Paxton told police two men came to his home Monday night and asked him to help start their car.

'A very strongfeeling from the Lord told me something wasn't right, so I took off all my jewelry and put it in a drawer and stuck a .38-caliber pistol in my left coat pocket,' Paxton said.

Paxton said he went to his van to drive the men to their car, but they began beating him. 'Then (one of the men) put a hammerlock on my neck and told the other guy to kill me,' Paxton said.

Paxton, 41, was severely beaten and shot twice in the upper back. Although Paxton couldn't reach the pistol in his pocket, he said he was able to grab a gun from one of his assailants and shoot him.

Police said the assailant shot by Paxton was Darryl C. Langley, 20, of Hampton, Ga., who was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He remains in General Hospital under police guard.

Authorities in Jonesboro, Ga., arrested Darrell W. Bailey, 24, of Jonesboro Wednesday night as a suspect in the incident. Bailey will be extradicted to Tennessee, Metro Police said.

'The motive is murder,' said Homicide Detective Michael McDerman. 'We are sure of that. But we don't have any idea yet why the suspects wanted to kill him.'
