AGANA, Guam -- Kimberley Santos was crowned Miss World in her island home of Guam Friday, heralded by conch shell trumpets and strumming guitars.
A crowd of 5,000 Guamanians cheered the 19-year-old Queen-by-default as she was crowned by the 1978 Miss World, Mary Stavin, of Sweden.
Miss Santos was picked for the title because the first choice, Gabriella Brum of Germany, resigned almost immediately after her victory amid reports that she had been photographed in the nude by her American boyfriend.
Musicians blowing conch shells and strumming island love songs greeted Miss Santos as she arrived at the coronation site in a 60-foot catamaran, accompanied by a flotilla of canoes and motor boats.
She was whisked to a side room to 'freshen up' before ascending the flower-laden and bepalmed coronation pavilion.
'Though it is a win by default, I am still proud,' Miss Santos told the crowd, which included flocks of Japanese tourists.
'I will do my best for you, the people of Guam. Wherever I travel I will tell the people to visit Guam because of you, the people, the most beautiful people in the world.'
Miss Santos says she hopes to pursue a career in the travel industry, Guam's main source of income next the to the U.S. Government.
