ST. LOUIS -- A man who tried to parachute onto the Gateway Arch fell more than 600 feet to his death Saturday as his wife filmed the attempt, police said.
Kenneth Swyers, 33, Overland, Mo., parachuted from a private plane shortly before 9 a.m. and tried to land on top of the 630-foot Arch on the Mississippi riverfront, police said.
A witness told police Swyers landed on the north leg of the stainless steel structure, where a gust of wind apparently made him begin sliding downward.
The witness said Swyers' parachute collapsed and what appeared to be a backup chute failed to open. Swyers was pronounced dead at City Hospital.
Swyers' wife was on the ground near the Arch to film her husband's feat, police said.
Officers said Swyers had been a parachutist for six years.
