SAN FRANCISCO -- The 1978 national soccer championship, won by the University of San Francisco, has been declared vacated and USF must return the championship trophy, the school announced Tuesday.
Father John LoSchiavo, president of USF, said the action was taken because a former student-athlete who played on the team had submitted an altered transcript at the time of his application for enrollment.
He said no one at the admissions office or on the coaching staff was aware of the falsified transcript.
The school president also announced that due to infractions committed earlier this year in attempting to recruit a high school basketball player, the university has been publicly censured by the NCAA and placed on probation for one year.
The NCAA did not, however, impose any sanctions, so USF is eligible to participate in post-season tournament play, Fr. LoSchiavo said.
