The score made the contest the highest-rated World Series game in television history, and the pre-game show scored No. 2, at 27.4, in the top 10.
NBC retained its top ranking for the season with a Neilsen score of 20.7 for the past six weeks.
ABC placed second with 17.1, leaving CBS in the cellar at 16.2.
ABC and CBS, however, might argue with the score, since both _ hobbled by the actors' strike _ claim the new season didn't even begin until Monday.
NBC insists it all started Sept. 15 _ and with good reason. If its competitors' starting date is accepted by whatever powers worry about such things, all the NBC blockbusters _ 'Shogun,' 'Playing for Time,' 'Beulah Land' and the World Series _ are effectively said never to have existed.
Viewers know better, but in the rating game, credentials are all-important.
