HOLLYWOOD -- President Carter telephoned Mary Tyler Moore several hours after her only child shot himself to death to express his sympathies to the family.
A spokesman for the family Friday said Carter called the actress from New Jersey. He refused to disclose details of the Wednesday conversationsor say how long the talk lasted.

Miss Moore has made a television commerical endorsing Carter for re-election, but the spokesman said they are not close personal friends.
Authorities have said it would probably never be determined whether the death of Richard Meeker Jr. was accidental or a suicide, but Meeker's friends and family say they were sure the shooting was an accident.
