HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Independent presidential candidate John Anderson will receive editorial endorsement in the Sunday edition of the Hutchinson News, the newspaper said Friday.

Editor Richard Buzbee said the endorsement of Anderson came about because the candidate 'has compassionately merged the virtues of social involvement with prudent economic understanding.'

'His campaign suggests a theme that honesty is the best policy in taxation, as well as philosophy, energy and politics,' Buzbee said.

The candidacies of President Carter and former California Gov. Ronald Reagan represent 'an equality of despair' for U.S. voters, Buzbee said. He said Carter's presidency is a failure, in which his campaign of 'viperous hyprocrisy ... has added meanness to incompetence.'

Buzbee described Reagan's candidacy as 'a nostalgically imprecise vision of a future shrouded in a past that never was... and shackled with a chain of uncompromising single-issue goals, each link of which makes no allowance for reason, logic or compromises of living together.'

'A revulsion against the two major parties is sufficient reason to choose any third-part candidate,' the editorial says.
