DETROIT -- Chrysler Corp. said Wednesday that actor Gregory Peck, impressed with the company's survival efforts, has volunteered to appear in television commercials to promote the 1981 K-car compacts.

Chrysler said Peck met company Chairman Lee A. Iacocca recently on a visit to Detroit-area plants with Frank Sinatra, who signed on earlier as a Chrysler booster.

Like Sinatra, Peck will accept no compensation for the television appearances, the company said.

He will open a Dodge Aries commercial with the line 'America's not gonna be pushed around anymore' _ a play on front-wheel drive features of the K-cars as well as on Chrysler's theme of fighting high gas prices.

Chrysler said Peck became concerned about the 600,000 jobs dependent on the company.

'That's the difference between good times or hard times for 600,000 families,' Peck said in a statement. 'I told Mr. Iacocca I wanted to help.'
